Participant Observer

Hello Readers!

Welcome to the latest edition of the San Diego Participant Observer newsletter.

In this issue, we share a recipe for the ever-popular Pad Thai. Our Book of the Month is A Spell of Good Things by Nigerian author Ayobami Adebayo, and our international music recommendation is Mawja, an album by Sahrawi (Saharan) singer Aziza Brahim.

This weekend and in the days ahead, cultural events and festivals include the multi-day Gator by the Bay, the annual Balboa Park Pow Wow, a Nowruz Festival, and a Latino Arts Festival. The International Fringe Festival also kicks off next week.

Music and dance performances range from Reggae and Roots to Korean Pungmul, Indian Classical, Filipino, Cumbia, Mariachi, and Gamelan—alongside a strong showing of solo artists. Next weekend, the Center for World Music presents Sounds of the Royal Courts: Gamelan Music & Dance of Java at the Mingei Museum. Be sure to use the WVP10 discount code when purchasing tickets—we hope to see you there.

Film lovers will find a number of special screenings around town, as well as several international films currently in theaters.

Theater highlights include the final performances of Regency Girls at the Old Globe and Bad Hombres, Good Wives at Palomar, both closing this Sunday. The touring production of Hamilton has just opened, and House of India premieres tomorrow at the Globe.

A variety of talks—some literary, some more broadly focused—are scheduled in the coming days.

A gentle reminder:

Many local nonprofits are grappling with unprecedented challenges that are significantly curtailing the programs and services they provide. Sadly, there’s little sign that conditions will improve anytime soon.

Just last Friday, numerous arts organizations lost their NEA grants—funding that was critical to sustaining their work. The need to support San Diego’s cross-cultural nonprofits (and other community-based organizations) has never been more urgent.

We’ve compiled a list of cross-cultural organizations that could truly benefit from your support—whether through donations, volunteering, or simply helping spread the word: San Diego Cross-Cultural Organizations. If you know of any organizations we missed, please let us know—we’re happy to add them.

Recipe of the Month

Pad Thai
Pad Thai

Our Recipe for this Month is for Pad Thai, arguably Thailand’s most internationally recognized dish. It's a stir-fried noodle dish that embodies the country’s culinary principles of taste harmony. Sweet, sour, salty, and umami flavors blend with chewy rice noodles, crunchy peanuts, tangy tamarind, and garlic chives to create a delightful melody of flavors.

CD of the Month

Sahrawi singer-songwriter activist Aziza Brahim's fifth album Mawja (Wave in Hassaniya Arabic) is fashioned from a simple but powerful foundational palette: Saharan and Iberian percussion entwining with stately guitars and warm, enveloping bass - Co-produced by Brahim with long-time collaborator Guillem Aguilar, the record from her oeuvre that Mawja most sonically resembles is her revered and graceful debut Soutak (2014).

Book of the Month

A dazzling story of modern Nigeria and two families caught in the riptides of wealth, power, romantic obsession, and political corruption from the celebrated author of Stay with Me, "in the lineage of great works by Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie" (The New York Times).
