Hello Readers! Welcome to the latest edition of the San Diego Participant Observer newsletter. In this issue, we share a recipe for the ever-popular Pad Thai. Our Book of the Month is A Spell of Good Things by Nigerian author Ayobami Adebayo, and our international music recommendation is Mawja, an album by Sahrawi (Saharan) singer Aziza Brahim. This weekend and in the days ahead, cultural events and festivals include the multi-day Gator by the Bay, the annual Balboa Park Pow Wow, a Nowruz Festival, and a Latino Arts Festival. The International Fringe Festival also kicks off next week. Music and dance performances range from Reggae and Roots to Korean Pungmul, Indian Classical, Filipino, Cumbia, Mariachi, and Gamelan—alongside a strong showing of solo artists. Next weekend, the Center for World Music presents Sounds of the Royal Courts: Gamelan Music & Dance of Java at the Mingei Museum. Be sure to use the WVP10 discount code when purchasing tickets—we hope to see you there. Film lovers will find a number of special screenings around town, as well as several international films currently in theaters. Theater highlights include the final performances of Regency Girls at the Old Globe and Bad Hombres, Good Wives at Palomar, both closing this Sunday. The touring production of Hamilton has just opened, and House of India premieres tomorrow at the Globe. A variety of talks—some literary, some more broadly focused—are scheduled in the coming days. A gentle reminder: Many local nonprofits are grappling with unprecedented challenges that are significantly curtailing the programs and services they provide. Sadly, there’s little sign that conditions will improve anytime soon. Just last Friday, numerous arts organizations lost their NEA grants—funding that was critical to sustaining their work. The need to support San Diego’s cross-cultural nonprofits (and other community-based organizations) has never been more urgent. We’ve compiled a list of cross-cultural organizations that could truly benefit from your support—whether through donations, volunteering, or simply helping spread the word: San Diego Cross-Cultural Organizations. If you know of any organizations we missed, please let us know—we’re happy to add them. On to the events!
